Badge Ball
Battle of the Badges was
started in 2002 by Chris Blunt a Cudahy Police Officer and
Rick McGaver, a now retired Cudahy Firefighter. The idea
was to have an annual basketball and softball game between
the Cudahy Police and Fire Departments. The events of 9/11
had something to do with it. Police Officers and
Firefighters were honored as heroes as a result of what
happened in New York on that day. We felt this was an
opportunity to build camaraderie between the 2 departments
and celebrate the importance of police officers and
firefighters in the community.
In 2006, Pete Jaske from the
South Milwaukee Police Department approached Chris Blunt
about starting an annual basketball game between the South
Milwaukee and Cudahy Police Departments. The idea made
sense as both departments know each other extremely well and
could benefit from good relations, which we currently have.
The first game was held in 2006 in South Milwaukee. The
site usually rotates between the cities each year.
These games show us in a
different light, allow us to build friendships between the
departments, promote physical fitness, and raise money for
charity.
Since 2002, Badge Ball and
Battle of the Badges have combined to raise more than
$24,000 for charity, primarily Make-A-Wish foundation of
Wisconsin. In 2009, we gave the proceeds to Dennis LaDoux,
a disabled Cudahy firefighter.
Highlights of previous games:
Cudahy PD has won 3 of the 4 games between
the 2 departments. All of the games have been
entertaining and close.
